Material properties

There are two types of high-grade natural wool felt. Industrial / SAE felt. 100% wool felt that is usually sold for doll making / craft applications come in a multitude of colours.

Laser cutting

With all natural fabrics, the edges mark slightly when cut. Usually a very light brown singed appearance. We cut felt on the engraving table or clean honeycomb bed which can also mark the underside very slightly.

Cut edge

The laser seals the edge to prevent fraying with a brown appearance.
Synthetic felts are usually acrylic based. These laser cut with a glossy edge and with a more melted appearance and less dark tones.

Cut widths & Kerf

As a benchmark, we recommend that minimum cut widths be no thinner than 2mm.

Laser engraving

Most natural felts tend to engrave with a brown tinge. The lighter the felt tone the stronger the engraving contrast.

Supplying fabrics flat as possible

You need to make sure you supply your cotton as flat as possible. Try and make sure it is not crumpled, this can have issues on the focus of the laser.
